Poetry in Voice: a tour/ how to/ DUE DATES.
Hello 12s,

Today we began looking at preparations for our Poetry in Voice events.

I am placing thoughts/instructions/links and due dates here for you.

Please commit some time to this post and to touring the links provided.

·                  Poem choice due: December 14th (printed twice, one for you and one for me)
·                I will follow up next week with instructions on how you will need to format the printed copies.
·                We will be having an in- class recitation competition and/or assignment January 15th.
·                 For this you need to choose a poem from the https://www.poetryinvoice.com/ website.
o                 Here you will find example recitation videos: view others' performances as inspiration.
o                 Poems can be accessed in a variety of ways see them here: View a bunch and choose a poem!
o                 Once you have chosen your poem you need to understand/interpret/memorize and practice it! Here is some very good advice for how to proceed! Tips and clips!

We will spend some time before winter break working with your poems. We will do so again the week you return in January. The class competition will be held on January 15th.  You need to have your poem memorized and ready to share on this day.

Each student will share a poem as part of our language component for class. You will receive a mark for doing so (rubric to come). If you choose not to be part of the competition aspect, that is fine just let me know.

If you are taking part in the competition, there are some things you'll need to know:
·                The school competition will be on Feb. 1 and 2
·                The student with the highest score from each class will participate at the school competition and will need a second poem ready to go for the 2nd.
o                 If you think you might like to try for this, you ought to choose 2 right from the start so that you have enough time to get ready.
o                 See that one of them is 25 lines or shorter
o                 See that they contrast in tone/mood/style etc. to show your range.

Because this is,ultimately a national competition, there are firm guidelines to which we all must adhere. There is a set scoring system and there are rules. See here:
·                rules-dates

So! To reiterate, your poems need to be chosen and printed (by you) by class on December 14th. You will present these on January 15th from memory. The school competition for those who go on will take place over 2 days (1 poem per person per day).

Next class, I'll take the questions that arise from this post.
Cheers,
Ms. S

(EXTENSION!)

Hello All,

BECAUSE YOU HAVE ALL JUST GOT YOUR REPORT CARDS, BEEN AWAY, BEEN VERY BUSY AND BEEN WORKING WELL IN CLASS, I AM GIVING US ALL AN EXTENSION ON BOTH OF THE ASSIGNMENTS.

The chances of me getting to this marking this weekend are slim so there is no reason for you rush to submit. Sorry for the late notice but I have received a couple of emails concerned so I thought an extension might help.

Regards all.
TS

This is a reminder that your cycle #3 is due Friday Dec. 8. (See below for a reminder of the assignment).

Today we began looking at how to express a Theme statement.  You were given a notes page with instructions on how to derive and express a theme statement. You first try is Due Friday Dec. 8.

Cheers,
Ms. S

Cycle #3 test weight and link to review

Hello 12s,

Today we will go over your cycle #2. We will explore ways to augment what you are doing.

Then, you will create your #3 cycle at test weight. Now, the hero of the journey is YOU!
Due: Friday December 8/17

  • Choose a transformational journey/story from your own life
  • Chart it on the cycle identifying all the elements as we have learned them.
  • Because your story is unknown to me, you will need to write it in point form on the back so that I can identify the elements of your story.
Here is a link to an interview with Joseph Campbell and another one that unpacks the ideas here:Hero's cycle clip
I very much look forward to reading them.

Next,

For next block, review the following link:

We will have a lesson/searching session on this next block.
