How to prep. for tomorrow's in-class quiz weight paragraph questions. . .

Hi 12s,

Last class you worked in teams identifying rhetorical/stylistic/literary devices as they occurred in the four essays we have looked at so far. You posted your findings for the whole group and took your own photo-notes.

Prior to next class you can prepare by doing the following:

1. Review the terminology notes in the links posted below as well as your own class notes (mentioned above).
2. Ask yourself, "What is the effect of this device as it is used here? How does it help meet the aims of this essay/author?" 
3. Review your How Best to Use Quotations notes, refer back to your own writing. Are you setting up for and embedding yours? Bring any questions you have to next class.
4. Review formatting for paragraph responses:T.A.G, P.E.E.c, and literary present tense.

Friday we reviewed your mapping of the essays we have been reading. Note: the goal here is to identify tools/styles/ methods that writers are using. Once we do that, we can clarify the utility of said tools so that we might use them ourselves when we choose.

Homework for Friday Oct. 13

Hello 12s,

Today you got your 'Dishes' questions back as well as some advice for improvement (board notes)

You reviewed/brainstormed 'Girl's Story' questions and we discussed.

Homework due Friday Oct. 13:

• Review and map the format of each of the 3 essays  we have read. (Do not give a synopsis)
• How does the format serve the essay's purpose?
• Read the handout on How best to use quotations.

By way of comparison consider how we use a list  for groceries rather than a novel.  Or, consider the effect/purpose  of the' T.A.G  P.E.E.C ' format. When and why do we use this as opposed to some other essay format?

This is a homework weight assignment but is a pivotal element for this unit of study.

I am available to answer questions re: the homework Thursday Oct. 12.

Using P.E.E formatting and literary present tense, respond to the following questions.

1.     How would you describe the speaker? What sort of a character (trait vocabulary) does he seem to be and how do we know? (textual evidence)

2.     How would you describe Jeff? What sort of a character (trait vocabulary does he seem to be and how do we know? (textual evidence)

3.     What is the overall tone of the essay?

4.     What is the thesis of this essay? Is it explicit or implicit?  State it in a full sentence. (You don’t need a full paragraph here.)

5.     Can you relate in any way to this narrative essay in any way? Respond to it from your own perspective. (4 lines minimum.)

This is homework weight and will be marked 1/2 on content 1/2 on Paragraph format.

Today's lesson and Homework

Hi 12s,

Today we are working looking at the basic structure for an essay. This is largely review.
For today's class you were to review the links below to prepare.

Today you:

•  reviewed introductory paragraphs and created one
• reviewed paragraph/essay structure
• viewed  and discussed the video clip provided below(see links on last post)

Your next class is 5 days away. In that time you will create an outline for the essay you have introduced today.

Here are two links to clarify outline limits:outline sample #1, Outline sample#2

You are free to bring your typed/elaborated introduction to class for the in-class write but your outline must be limited to 

point form as seen in the two examples above.  

Due Sept. 26th : Essay outline (very limited text) and introduction 

Sept. 26th : Write in-class essay based on your outline from home (Quiz weight). 

Rubric for marking is available for pick up today and tomorrow until I manage to share it here. : )

Remember, you are being assessed on form  and written skill less so than on content. The video is meant to offer a

 jumping off point for your essay. See the class notes link to review basic the paragraph structure notes we did last class.

If you missed today or if you see a classmate who missed today, please have them come see me Thursday (tomorrow)
