Bring homework/study materials.

Hello 12s,

Your counsellor is without a voice today and so will not be in class tomorrow.

In light of all of the work pending for us all, I think rather than start immediately with our next unit we will take the class as a study block. As such, come ready to work quietly. Let’s utilize this time to take some of the pressure off yes?

I will just share some strong examples of your 'Taming' papers.

See you tomorrow.

Late assignment make up date/Notes based on assignments/due dates

Hello 12s,

  • Next block, I will return your marked assignments.
  • Those of you who have late assignments (2A/B) may submit them at the start of the block.
  • Submissions later than that will only be accepted if completed at a group make up time Wednesday 28/18 lunch next week in my class.
  • If you do not attend to write the make ups in class, I'll not be taking them in. This is to attempt to maintain some marks integrity. To this end, do NOT bring work completed ahead of time; it will not be permitted.
Notes based on your quiz and homework:

  • Employ critical theory in your analysis-look at multiple perspectives and motivations.
  • Review active voice-get to your point efficiently: Active versus Passive voice review
  • Be aware of answering, completely, the questions that are being posed. Embed the question and your answer in your topic sentence/thesis statement.
    • ex. When asked whether the discourse between Katherine and Petruchio is flirtation or fighting, many of you answered the entire question without ever giving Kate's perspective on the matter.  This is an incomplete response.
    • The omission, in light of gender theory, is suggestive of you perpetuating a power imbalance between males and females and reads a little patriarchally
    • It is not a fair reading of the scene because it is a biased/incomplete reading.
  • Do NOT share assignments. Assignments with the same points/citations constitute plagiarism. These assignments (both) receive a mark of 0%.
  • Argue only what you ideas for which, you provide evidence/support.

Feb. 21:

See past posts and NOTES ON LIT. PARAGRAPH WRITING

Hello 12s,

Please find here, some things to review/remember as you continue writing your critical theory/close reading, literary paragraphs/essays:
mechanics-

  • Embed the question in your topic sentence. Ensure you are on topic.
  • Use [square brackets] to include changes or additions to your quotations.
  • Set up your quotational support so we know the context of the quote.
  • Ensure that the support you are providing is in fact the best evidence to prove your point.
  • Remember that quotes must be grammatically correct in the context of your whole piece.
Stylistics-
  • Do not declare bold assertions that you cannot or do not support with evidence and analysis.
  • Try not to be overly hasty to ascribe blame. Consider all perspectives/motivations of the characters. That is what critical theory affords us - perspective taking.
  • Equivocate. Rather than "it is!" Try, "it is therefore reasonable to imagine/assume" or "One can construe/imagine that X might be so, given that "Y" and "W" have occurred.
Points to ponder-
  • Why does Baptista say to Petruchio, " my daughter Katherine, this I know, She is not for your turn"? (2.1.63,64)
  • Does Kate want  to be married? Find evidence to support both a yes and a no answer.
Remember you have an extension which means both 2A and 2B are due on Feb. 14 (even if you are on a field trip.)
Have a terrific long weekend.
