Please find here, some things to review/remember as you continue writing your critical theory/close reading, literary paragraphs/essays:
mechanics-
- Embed the question in your topic sentence. Ensure you are on topic.
- Use [square brackets] to include changes or additions to your quotations.
- Set up your quotational support so we know the context of the quote.
- Ensure that the support you are providing is in fact the best evidence to prove your point.
- Remember that quotes must be grammatically correct in the context of your whole piece.
Stylistics-
- Do not declare bold assertions that you cannot or do not support with evidence and analysis.
- Try not to be overly hasty to ascribe blame. Consider all perspectives/motivations of the characters. That is what critical theory affords us - perspective taking.
- Equivocate. Rather than "it is!" Try, "it is therefore reasonable to imagine/assume" or "One can construe/imagine that X might be so, given that "Y" and "W" have occurred.
Points to ponder-
- Why does Baptista say to Petruchio, " my daughter Katherine, this I know, She is not for your turn"? (2.1.63,64)
- Does Kate want to be married? Find evidence to support both a yes and a no answer.
Remember you have an extension which means both 2A and 2B are due on Feb. 14 (even if you are on a field trip.)
Have a terrific long weekend.
Ms. S
