Today you submitted your Ch. 10/11 questions.
Read Ch. 13/14/16 for next block.
We reviewed Theme Statements and I re-handed out notes on how to derive and to express theme.
- As part of your preliminary work for your final P1 project, you will submit :
- your own original theme statement of The Power of One
- along with your outline
- and works cited. These are due: May 3rd.
- We practiced writing a theme statement in class as practice. You are invited to continue working on these and running them by me for help if you'd like.
- We began to explore the reciprocal nature of P1.
- We charted the interconnected nature of Pk and all the other individuals in the story.
- We referenced Doc's quotes/lessons from last block regarding how things work together. (See p.162)
- We looked at the evolving mystique that is beginning to surround PK and noted the various sources/reasons/ways that this evolving mythology connects to other needs/stories/mythologies.
- Dates for the project as they stand now are located on the timeline posted April 4.
- Feel free to come to class/email with your ideas and questions.
- I strongly recommend that you not leave your preparations until the last minute for this. While, concise, Pecha Kucha requires PRECISION. "Winging it" really doesn't work with this format.
- The enticement to you is meant to be that you choose your preferred area of focus. As such, you can talk from a position of knowledge and interest.
- You will do well if you demonstrate your theme of the power of one as it is enacted through your example and convey your ideas/info. clearly through both words and images in a timely fashion.

Pecha Kucha on Theme of P1
Early in his novel Bryce Courtney
articulates the personal nature of what we come to know as ‘the power of one.’
“In each of us there burns a flame of independence that must never be allowed
to go out… as long as it exists within us we cannot be destroyed.” (p.21)
Later he broadens the notion of ‘the
power of one’ to encompass more than the merely personal, encompassing the
larger, reciprocal impact it can have. He seems to suggest that people rely
upon one another, particularly in difficult times, to ignite, foster and fan
the flame of ‘the power of one’. “Inside all people there is love, also the
need to take care of the other man who is his brother… When a man is
brutalized… always he is looking for small signs. The smallest sign is that
someone is worried for him is like a fire on the dark mountain. When a man
knows somebody cares he keeps some small places, a corner maybe of his soul, clean
and lit.” (p.236)
For example, both Peekay and Nelson
Mandela seem to possess almost mythical significance for those around them.
Despite the considerable challenges created by their circumstances, each seem
to have fostered the ‘power of one’ both personally and publicly. By exploiting
their personal potential for the betterment of others, each seem to reach
‘greatness’.

Tips:
1.
Choose
a topic that you can speak passionately about.
2.
Use
note cards to organize your speech
3.
Choose
relevant images – remember to source them if not your own
· Large images work best
· Use as little text as possible
· No more than four images per slide
Make slides consistent – should look
roughly the same
4. Practice and refine your talk
· Practice against a timed version
· Practicing standing up/voice projection
· Look at various points in the room when
speaking-eye contact
· No “uhm” or “ahhs”; silence is ok
· Let your slides do some of the work
